Are Hybrid Vehicles Safe?

Brian Walker @ 2008-08-06 01:49  (Shopping and Travel)

The cost of living is on the rise, and oil prices are hitting record levels. People are more than careful these days how they operate their vehicles because of gas prices. These challenges have caused many people to look at the growing trend of driving hybrid vehicles. However, are hybrid vehicles safe?

Hybrid vehicles have proven to be as safe as gasoline-powered vehicles. The crash specifications are the same as those of normal cars. Hybrids also have the same restraint and airbag systems installed. The only area that might be of concern is the high voltage circuits linked to the drive motor assembly.

However, these components are marked for safety, and the cables are wrapped in bright colors that indicate caution. Additionally, the cables are not located in areas where vehicle occupants would ordinarily discover them.

Many of the current hybrids on the road are quick, small, and nimble. They also rank high in safety ratings for their class. While SUV's tend to make people feel safe, they have an atrocious record in terms of rolling over in a quick turn. They are also quite difficult to maneuver, and this can often be a safety challenge within itself.

Also, SUV's do not have to meet the same safety standards as passenger cars, due to federal rules that classify SUV's in the same category as light trucks. The hybrid has to meet the same safety standards as those of a conventional vehicle. For the consumer, safety should not be a reason to avoid purchasing a hybrid as compared to its conventional counterpart.

Many manufacturers of hybrids also address safety by posting online manuals that address rescue procedures in case of an accident. Safety courses, including hands-on-training, are also provided for emergency workers. The bottom line is that hybrids do not pose a greater threat than conventional vehicles in the event of a collision or rescue.

However, since hybrid vehicles have similar loads of gasoline, antifreeze, and other potentially dangerous fluids, the danger posed is not less than that of a conventional vehicle. Some hybrids use as much as 650 volts of electrical power, and by all standards this amount is enough to cause serious damage under the right conditions.

This makes it imperative that the owner or rescuer of a hybrid vehicle is up on all the standard safety procedures. There are also built-in electronic fail-safe measures for many models that address the safety issue. As a whole, the industry is very keen on educating consumers and safety rescuers on safety protocols. The last thing anyone wants is for an emergency responder to hesitate during an emergency call.

According to the experts, the growing vehicle segment of hybrid vehicles should not pose a threat that is greater than that of traditional combustion engine cars.

Understanding Hybrid Vehicles

Brian Walker @ 2008-07-29 01:10  (Shopping and Travel)

Hybrid vehicles address two important issues in the world today. The first is global warming, and the second is the reduction of fuel costs. There are going to many different hybrid vehicle models showing up on the radar screen, and understanding how they work will aid the consumer in getting the best value for money spent.

Hybrid models at present fall into two basic categories: electric and gasoline. Hybrid vehicles use a combination of both gas and electricity for power. The parallel hybrid and the series hybrid are the two most popular hybrid vehicles today. The difference between the two is in the complexity of the technology, and options used by engineers in employing hybrid systems.

In the series hybrid, an electronic motor assists the gasoline engine, such as in accelerating or times of heavy load. The electronic motor is not able to power the car on its own. Recharging the engine can be accomplished through the batteries that power the electric motor.

A parallel hybrid makes use of a similar recharging scenario. However, this type of vehicle can only be powered by the gasoline engine. A major advantage of a hybrid engine is that it is smaller, and can therefore run a lot more efficient. Normally, acceleration has required larger engines, but with the assistance of an electrical motor operating at peak load, the acceleration needs of a hybrid vehicle are adequately answered.

Another advantage of the hybrid is that it can capture energy from the braking system. Heat is captured upon breaking, and stored as energy in the battery. Additionally, an automatic shutoff in the hybrid vehicle can turn the engine off when the car comes to a stop, and then automatically restart the vehicle when the accelerator is touched. This conserves energy that can is wasted when the vehicle is idling.

Hybrid vehicles can reduce tail pipe emissions while improving gas mileage. The good news for the consumer is that hybrid technology, in all of its forms, remains relatively simple. Consumers can expect the technology to develop and improve over time. Also, costs can be expected to level off in time as well. The concept of the hybrid vehicle is here to stay, and we can all do our part for ourselves, and the environment, by thinking green.

Like every major change in life, getting used to the hybrid concept will take time for many people. If you are interested in purchasing a hybrid vehicle for all the right reasons, the mental adjustment should come naturally.

Using Gas Saving Products to Save Money on Gas

Brian Walker @ 2008-07-02 00:22  (Shopping and Travel)

With the rising cost of gas prices, everyone wants to save as much money at the gas pump as they possibly can. You may not be able to control the price of gas, but you can change certain habits and follow some basic guidelines to help you save as much money as possible.

Although the studies are still inconclusive, you might want to consider using gas saving products to save you money at the gas pump. The following products have been tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

1. Air Bleed Devices.

These types of devices are designed to bleed air into the carburetor and are generally installed in your vehicle in the Positive Crankcase Ventilation line.

- Fuel Max
- Aquablast Wyman Valve Air Bleed

Gift Basket Theme Ideas

Brian Walker @ 2008-06-08 23:59  (Shopping and Travel)

Some gift baskets offer a delightful miscellany of items. But successful gift baskets often attract attention because they're built around a unifying theme. Those themes can run the full range of creativity.

They may be as simple and obvious, but still as lovely, as the items desired for an upcoming wedding. Perfumes, dried flowers, or small jewelry will be appreciated by bridesmaids. Or the theme may run in an entirely different direction connected to no single event at all. A gift basket of potpourri or forest-related items can bring joy to any recipient.

Combination themes always make for a great gift basket. Chocolates can well stand alone in a delightful container of straw or wood. But how much better to add a small bottle of champagne or wine to mix in with the sweets? Sometimes a combination makes for a unifying theme itself, as when sewing accessories are combined with beautiful buttons or cloth samples, for example.

The traditional fruit basket is sometimes mocked. But there's always the possibility of giving a new twist to an old idea. Pick exotic fruits from a certain country, or combine them with unusual nuts. Lay some flowers from the fruit trees themselves among the produce and create an explosion of color. The result will be not only something delicious, but a work of art as well.

Gift baskets that are associated with a particular state or country are very popular. Everyone loves to see the familiar items from home joined together in creative ways.

The pine cones of Idaho or the native flowers of Colorado are only two possibilities of natural items that will be welcomed. But miniature toys like oil wells from Texas or skyscrapers from New York can equally fill the bill. Go international and include some stuffed lions from Africa or turtles from the Galapagos islands. Announce the time in a gift basket with a reproduction of London's Big Ben.

Handicrafts make for a great gift basket theme and the choices are endless. Small, hand-made jewelry of jade quickly become collector's items. Silver shaped into tiny tools or trinkets will be kept for a lifetime. Tiny bears or badgers carved out of ivory or sandstone can fill a basket with reminders of happy vacations.

Holiday gift baskets are a natural theme. There are many to choose from. Christmas is an obvious, but still perfect option. Tiny toys or traditional foods can be surrounded by a perfect wreath. Miniature reindeer happily pull a sleigh filled with Santa and his package of gifts. But the 4th of July, Halloween, and many more make it just as easy to devise a great set of gifts for friends and loved ones.

Let your imagination soar. The possibilities for a gift basket theme are bounded only by the creativity you possess.

How to Keep Your Home Safe While on Vacation

Brian Walker @ 2007-11-14 11:24  (Shopping and Travel)

Many burglaries occur while the homeowners and family are away from the house. It's often ridiculously easy to spot a house that has been unoccupied for a day or more and is likely to be so longer. Taking a few simple precautions can minimize your chances of being a victim of crime.

Many common sense tips are well known by now. Stop the mail, stop the newspaper or have a neighbor pick them up. Lock up the house and leave a light on. But even these common techniques could use improvement.

Stopping the newspaper could just look like you decided not to have it anymore, so that's fine. But, stopping all mail delivery is also a signal to thieves, since everyone gets at least some, if only junk mail. Better to have it picked up daily, then taken inside the house by a neighbor, who then exits out the back.

Leaving a light on is fine, too, except when it burns all the time. Then it looks unnatural and staged. Better to have at least a simple timer that turns it off during the day and on at night. Better still is to have one that will turn it off and on at night several times, as you would if you were home. Putting the stereo or radio on a timer is a good idea, too.

If you don't have a home security system, vacation time might be a good time to consider installing one. Plan ahead, so you have plenty of time to get the right one without being pressured. But ensure that you get one that is not only regularly monitored, but offers neighborhood patrols by your house.

If or when you do get a home security system, be sure to notify them that you plan to be away. Provide them with dates. Most companies will pay a little bit better attention if they know there's no one at home.

A friendly letter to the operations manager doesn't hurt and does improve your odds of extra service during your vacation. Everyone likes to be thanked for positives, since complaints for poor performance are so much more common.

Best of all is to hire a house sitter that will stay there at least part of the time. It adds a cost to your vacation, but having a person in the home - especially at night - will ward off all but a small minority of criminals. Sometimes you can work out a trade with a neighbor or responsible teen friend of your own kids. You cover their home on vacation, they cover yours.

If you have a neighborhood watch program, as is very helpful, be sure to let the one near your home know your plans. There are times when surprises are best left to birthdays.

Business gifts are an integral part of the corporate world of today. Contrary to popular belief, business gifts are not just used for appreciating employee performance, business gifts are also used by companies to promote their products and services. If you are currently looking for business gifts for your employees or clients, then here are a few ideas to help you make an impression. Before you begin your search for a business gift, the first step is choosing which type of business gift you would like to gift. Popular business gifts include electronic gadgets, pens, pen stands, clocks, watches and gourmet food gift baskets.

Electronic gadgets

Memory keys are perhaps the most popular business gifts available. Memory keys allow users to transfer data from one computer to another, and are ideal for people that have to synchronize data between computers. If your organization has a policy that forbids bringing memory keys to work, you can choose other electronic gadgets like digital clocks and digital photo frames. Digital photo frames are fast becoming popular business gifts, but are a little expensive when compared to other business gifts. Although digital clocks and digital organizers are a little defunct, they are still admired business gifts. Apart from digital photo frames, regular photo frames also make great business gifts.

Pens and portfolios

Pens have been used as business gifts for centuries now. Depending on your budget, you can choose from a wide array of pens. Irrespective of the nature of the recipient’s work, a pen is always handy for everyday work and makes a lasting impression. Leather portfolios are also popular business gifts, a leather portfolio can act as an ideal medium for advertising products and services. Leather portfolios can also be monogrammed to commemorate an occasion, or to personalize them as employee appreciation gifts.

Gourmet appreciation

Food gifts are fast becoming popular business gifts and popular gourmet appreciation gifts include chocolates, fruit hampers, picnic baskets and delicacies like cheesecakes and Filet Mignons. Although food gifts are relatively expensive when compared to other business gifts, they are ideally suited for senior executives and retiring employees. Cigars and expensive liquor are also viable business gifts, but are usually reserved for special occasions and senior executives.

Apart from the business gifts mentioned above, stress balls, coffee mugs and sippers are also popular business gifts. Monogrammed sweatshirts and t-shirts also make great business gifts. It is important to remember that some business gifts are suitable for gifting within the organization only and although there are no set rules when it comes to business gifts, it is pays to keep in mind the position of the person receiving the gift.

Modern business gifts include therapy balls and coil toys, thus proving that business gifts are no longer restricted to the usual pens and pen stands. With each passing day, newer and more innovative business gifts are being thought of. If you are looking for business gifts, don’t restrict yourself and look around for great gift ideas.

The History of Business Jets

Joe Mitchell @ 2007-01-16 13:10  (Shopping and Travel)

The waning years of WWII saw the introduction of the first jet fighter planes. Though the popular image is that Germany was the first to develop them, British pioneer Frank Whittle had drawing board designs of a jet plane as early as the mid-1930s.

After the end of the war, commercial airlines quickly realized the value of these faster planes. Everyone wants to get where they want to go sooner. Less time in the air means less jet lag, less stress from engine and wind noise, and more time on the ground to take care of business. For upscale business travelers, those goals were first approached in the mid-1960s.

Alongside the development of large, commercial airlines' use of jets - the famous Boeing 727 and its later cousins - there grew up a cottage industry of smaller jets designed primarily for ultra-rich customers.

Learjet, Lockheed JetStar and the Gulfstream II were the ultimate expressions of those design goals at the time. Selling for around $1 million (a hefty price tag forty years ago), these hand-built air limousines were heavily used by oil-rich sheiks and the J. Paul Getty's of the day.

For the younger crowd, J. Paul Getty was one of the richest men in the world from the 1940s until his death in 1976. The Bill Gates of his day - only his money came from oil not computers - he was the first individual to crack the $1 billion mark.

Gulfstream's GII had room for twelve and the interiors were as classy as the rooms of the most elegant hotels, with powerful motors for long range travel. That tradition continued to the mid-1980s and beyond. In 1985, the GIV weighed in at 74,600 lbs (33,900 kg) and had a range of 4,200 nautical miles.

Though the trend in interiors grew more corporate and less hotel-like through the 1990s, with jets evolving into flying offices, the lowered luxury didn't decrease the functional advantages. Flat-panel video monitors, satellite phones and many more useful amenities all found a place early-on in business jets. Many came to have divided conference rooms, sleeping accommodations and other features conducive to doing business around the clock and around the world.

If you're going to plan business strategies at 30,000 feet you have to have the tools.

As the millennium turned, the business jet market branched out. Larger planes were built to accommodate those with a need for global travel, and smaller jets were designed with lower production and operating costs.

The Boeing executive models of the B757, powered by Rolls Royce engines, has the same potential range as its commercial airline counterpart. Only it typically carries a lot less passenger weight. This plane, and others like the Cessna Citation X or Global Express, can travel almost anywhere in the world non-stop.

On the smaller end, the new VLJ (Very Light Jet) models, such as the HondaJet or Express Aviation's E500 still have great range - around 3,000 nautical miles - but at under 10,000 pounds and carrying only six have much lower production and operating costs.

The future looks even better for bizjets. It won't be too many years before small groups of average businessmen can form fractional ownership arrangements to have a jet at their disposal for short business trips or even a nice vacation.
