| Brian Walker @ 2007-09-20 13:24 (Home and Family) Crime rates vary, but in many large cities they've actually gone down over the past few decades. Still, the population has grown and the need for security is still very much with us.
Home security systems used to be largely reserved for the well-to-do. This made sense when the systems were very expensive and they were installed to protect even more expensive possessions. Fortunately, things have changed. Now, even very modest homes can afford some level of home security, especially since many components of a total design require nothing but a little common sense.
The first step is to consider how a thief might view your home, and how they might access it and get away with your possessions or harm your family. Shoring up weak parts and adopting better habits is often as much a matter of being more aware as it is spending money.
When it comes time to invest in home security the range of options is enormous, luckily. Inexpensive window locks, low-cost double-key door lock/deadbolt systems and other such items are within reach of just about anyone. Even video surveillance systems, once the exclusive preserve of the wealthy that most of us saw only in TV shows and films, are now affordable by the majority of homeowners.
Safes, too, used to be largely for the rich. Today, prices range from $50 or less for a simple wall safe that will hold jewelry or a laptop to a few hundred dollars for a gun safe or floor model. Safe rooms, or panic rooms as they're popularly known, can turn an entire room into a safe that is both fire protective and impenetrable. Costs are higher than a free-standing safe, but often little more than an ordinary room addition or remodeling job.
Lighting systems, both inside the home and outside, have evolved over the years as costs have come down. In days past a simple on-off timer inside and outdoor floodlights were about the only choices. Today, even very modest expenditures can net you a system that can be connected to your PC, increasing their usefulness.
Personal security options have grown. Tasers, chemical sprays and other devices are often carried by individuals in large cities. Concealed firearms are still controversial and sometimes illegal.
Still, many of the old-fashioned methods continue to be effective. Guard dogs, behavioral changes and having your neighbors look out for you are still effective security tools.
People are beginning to reverse the decades-long slide that kept neighbors a stranger, increasing their vulnerability. Now it's widely recognized that an active neighborhood watch program increases security substantially at almost no cost, and not just in dollars but in time as well.
Investigate your home and personal security options and you'll discover there's much you can do to enhance the safety of your possessions and your loved ones. And, you don't have to have (or spend) a fortune to do it.

Brian Walker @ 2007-07-12 10:30 (Home and Family) Living in an apartment or condo can be convenient, but you should never forget about security. Having a security guard at the entrance does not guarantee security. Below are some tips that might help you to improve your apartment security.
When you look for an apartment or condo for rent, always ask yourself: Is this a safe area? Is this apartment complex safe? If you have doubts, talk to the owner to see if he/she can get things fixed such as improving the lighting and repairing gate locks. Don't rent an apartment or condo if you think security is an issue there.
When you live in an apartment or condo, don't forget to keep your doors and windows locked when you are not at home. When you move in an apartment or condo, it will be good idea to have the original locks changed because some unknown people might have the key to the original lock. If allowed, you might also want to have a deadbolt lock to ensure higher level of security.
Don't leave the door unlocked even if you are at home. Don't open your door for strangers, even if they mention the name of your neighbors. Use the peephole to have a good look at the visitor before you open the door and require identification. Don't admit strangers through the gate as a favor. Also, get to know your neighbors and watch for suspicious people.
If possible, you might want to install additional security system such as home security alarms. If you do not plan to live in that apartment or condo for a long time, you can consider portable door or window alarms or a wireless home security system, so that they can come with you when you move. Also, getting renter's insurance can be an additional means to protect your assets.

eGuidePro @ 2007-05-11 10:17 (Shopping and Travel) Business gifts are an integral part of the corporate world of today. Contrary to popular belief, business gifts are not just used for appreciating employee performance, business gifts are also used by companies to promote their products and services. If you are currently looking for business gifts for your employees or clients, then here are a few ideas to help you make an impression. Before you begin your search for a business gift, the first step is choosing which type of business gift you would like to gift. Popular business gifts include electronic gadgets, pens, pen stands, clocks, watches and gourmet food gift baskets.
Electronic gadgets
Memory keys are perhaps the most popular business gifts available. Memory keys allow users to transfer data from one computer to another, and are ideal for people that have to synchronize data between computers. If your organization has a policy that forbids bringing memory keys to work, you can choose other electronic gadgets like digital clocks and digital photo frames. Digital photo frames are fast becoming popular business gifts, but are a little expensive when compared to other business gifts. Although digital clocks and digital organizers are a little defunct, they are still admired business gifts. Apart from digital photo frames, regular photo frames also make great business gifts.
Pens and portfolios
Pens have been used as business gifts for centuries now. Depending on your budget, you can choose from a wide array of pens. Irrespective of the nature of the recipient’s work, a pen is always handy for everyday work and makes a lasting impression. Leather portfolios are also popular business gifts, a leather portfolio can act as an ideal medium for advertising products and services. Leather portfolios can also be monogrammed to commemorate an occasion, or to personalize them as employee appreciation gifts.
Gourmet appreciation
Food gifts are fast becoming popular business gifts and popular gourmet appreciation gifts include chocolates, fruit hampers, picnic baskets and delicacies like cheesecakes and Filet Mignons. Although food gifts are relatively expensive when compared to other business gifts, they are ideally suited for senior executives and retiring employees. Cigars and expensive liquor are also viable business gifts, but are usually reserved for special occasions and senior executives.
Apart from the business gifts mentioned above, stress balls, coffee mugs and sippers are also popular business gifts. Monogrammed sweatshirts and t-shirts also make great business gifts. It is important to remember that some business gifts are suitable for gifting within the organization only and although there are no set rules when it comes to business gifts, it is pays to keep in mind the position of the person receiving the gift.
Modern business gifts include therapy balls and coil toys, thus proving that business gifts are no longer restricted to the usual pens and pen stands. With each passing day, newer and more innovative business gifts are being thought of. If you are looking for business gifts, don’t restrict yourself and look around for great gift ideas.

Joe Mitchell @ 2007-04-10 12:22 (Hobbies and Recreation) Receiving a gift basket is great fun. But making your own, whether for business or personal enjoyment is deeply satisfying. All your creativity is engaged. All your craftmaking skills are brought to bear. But many potential artists are stopped at the outset, unsure how to proceed. Rest assured, it's easy!
First, choose a theme. Your gift basket can be about anything. Have a family member who's an avid reader? Consider a gift basket full of books and top it off with a little book light. Add a piece of chocolate to hold them through their period of relaxation. Does someone you know like playing chess? Think of stuffing a gift basket with a miniature magnetized set and arranging the pieces in an interesting pattern.
Then get down to the design. Sketch out, on paper or just in your mind, what you'll need to execute your gift basket idea. Make a list of materials, sizes and tools. Then, go shopping. See, this is fun already.
You'll need a basket, of course. That can be anything that will hold the items - a traditional wicker container, an antique coffee can, an ancient toy bucket or a contemporary planter. Try to find something that complements your theme.
Once you have the container and the items, you'll usually want to be able to wrap everything up. Cellophane is one possible choice. Wax paper works well, too, because it's flexible and teases the recipient. They can see enough to be intrigued, but can't clearly make out what the gifts are.
Lay everything out and arrange your basket items inside the container. Remember that in many cases, they'll tend to shift around. Select some suitable stuffing material to keep them in place. It could be a delightful small kitchen towel, newspapers from years ago, or even marbles glued together. Try to keep it creative. Avoid ordinary bubble wrap or Styrofoam shipping peanuts.
Once they're arranged and secured, consider a 'topping'. You might sprinkle the gifts with star-shaped glitter, or heart-shaped confetti if it's the 4th of July or Valentine's Day. Make sure they won't spill out of the basket the second the wrapping is taken off. No one wants a gift that forces them to clean up afterward!
Wrap everything and store the basket appropriately. If it contains chocolate, room temperature is fine. If the basket holds white wine, you might want to tuck it in the refrigerator.
Then, don't forget about presentation. Prepare a glass of wine, or announce the opening with an appropriate song. Make it special. Preparing everything as if it were a special event, even when it's just a Thank You gift for the loan of some garden shears, brings enjoyment to life. That's what gifts are all about. Celebration. So, celebrate!

John Lee @ 2007-03-08 14:13 (Dating and Realtionship) One of the great things about online dating services is the anonymity and physical separation. You can enter a conversation and find out about a potential date behind the safety of your computer monitor. But that same advantage carries a risk - the risk of being conned.
Unfortunately, there are people in the world who use this new tool to harm others. They hide behind that screen, using it as a means of scamming those who just want to find a romantic partner. Flushing them out isn't easy or fool-proof, but there are several techniques you can use to up your odds against being scammed or worse.
Some people will mis-report their age, gender or other personal information. But an alert reader can often ferret out those falsehoods. The predators that hide online often slip-up on such simple and obvious things. They'll report experiences they couldn't possibly have had if they are who they say they are. They'll show unhealthy interest in someone. They'll make inconsistent statements about who they are and what they do or want.
The first reaction of most normal, healthy-minded and honest people online - which is the overwhelming majority - is to believe they must be misinterpreting. They give a little too much benefit of the doubt. Avoiding paranoia is good. The world isn't generally a dangerous place. But being alert and tuned into what's being said, while exercising appropriate caution, is wise.
Protect yourself further by not revealing too much too soon. Certain personal information should never be revealed to anyone online, unless you've met and know them fairly well. Your phone number, address and credit card information top the list.
When things reach the stage of considering a face-to-face meeting, a few phone calls first is a good idea. But either block your phone number from appearing when you call them or invest in a throwaway cell phone. Many services exist to reverse-look-up your address based on your phone number. Take proper precautions.
Never give out your address. You don't want uninvited visits from someone you don't yet know well. Never provide anyone with your credit card number, password or other protected financial information. Those items are among the most common means that identity thieves have for using your credit card without authorization.
Don't tell someone you barely know where you work, either. It may seem like a safer place to meet the first time, and it generally is. But if things don't work out, or they turn out not to be who they said they were, you don't want them to know where you'll be at predictable times.
It may sound romantic for someone to show a passionate interest in you right away. That's especially attractive to those who have been alone for a while and not meeting anyone interesting or exciting. But apart from the high odds of such a person being too needy, that can be just another way to lure the unwary.
'Trust, but keep your eyes open,' is a very wise old saying. Heed the advice.

eGuidePro @ 2007-02-15 08:11 (Health and Wellness) Do you know that flowers can not only decorate our living spaces, but according to a scientific research conducted at Rutgers University, flowers can also improve our emotional health?
According to this research, which took 10 months and involved many participants, flowers can have three impacts on our emotional heath.
1. Flowers can bring happiness. This is no surprise. Most people will smile when they receive flowers and bouquets, won’t they? This research has shown that the smiles people show upon receiving flowers are excited and true smiles, and this applies to all age groups, no matter how old or how young the participants are.
2. Flowers can change our mood positively. Yes, seeing flowers around can indeed make us feel less depressed and more satisfied. Next time when your friends or family feel depressed, you might consider sending them some flowers to release their stress. Also, if feel depressed or stressful, you can buy flowers to yourself as a gift to cheer yourself up!
3. Flowers can improve personal relationships. Maybe that’s why we always bring flowers to our dates, friends and family members? So, next time if you can’t decide what gifts to bring when you visit someone, maybe you can think about flowers!
Although it’s a common knowledge that flower can make people happy, this research has added a scientific foundation to this fact. Let’s thank the nature for offering us such as gift! With the knowledge that flowers can improve our emotional health, maybe we should pay more visits to the flower shop on the corner of the streets!

John Lee @ 2007-01-26 11:14 (Home and Family) Plants are just as popular as furniture when one is deciding on furniture and soft furnishings.
Aside from the aesthetic value plants provide your home with, there are also health benefits - grade school science class tells us that plants cleanse the air through utilizing the carbon dioxide and producing more oxygen. Here is some important information on how to care for your indoor plants to gain the optimum health and aesthetic benefits.
Lighting
Most indoor plants need good lighting. You can provide this through natural lighting in the room of your choice or there must be electric lighting. Darker leaved plants usually don't need as much light as others.
Here are the varieties of plants (usually those that only require medium to low light) that are known to be suitable for indoor gardening:
a. Philodendrons
b. Boston ferns
c. African violets
d. Cyclamens
e. Creeping Fig
Watering
A common mistake most people make in indoor gardening is they tend to over-water the plants, which may lead to rotting roots. Make sure to research the type of plant you have, because each kind of plant varies on their watering needs.
Potting
Choose good quality and attractive container for your indoor plants. Make sure that the pot is clean before placing your new plant into it to prevent infection and to encourage healthy growth.
Humidity
In indoor gardening, humidity is a big issue. The amount of moisture in the air has effect on the growth of the plants. During mornings, you could spray the plants with water for their much-needed moisture. Make sure the leaves don't get covered in dust.
Fertilization
Just like watering, fertilizing depends on the type of plant. If you have managed to supply your indoor garden with the right amount of light, water and humidity, fertilization may not need much attention. A good indoor fertilizer can be bought from most home depot or hardware stores. Orchids need the special fertilizer available.

Joe Mitchell @ 2007-01-16 13:10 (Shopping and Travel) The waning years of WWII saw the introduction of the first jet fighter planes. Though the popular image is that Germany was the first to develop them, British pioneer Frank Whittle had drawing board designs of a jet plane as early as the mid-1930s.
After the end of the war, commercial airlines quickly realized the value of these faster planes. Everyone wants to get where they want to go sooner. Less time in the air means less jet lag, less stress from engine and wind noise, and more time on the ground to take care of business. For upscale business travelers, those goals were first approached in the mid-1960s.
Alongside the development of large, commercial airlines' use of jets - the famous Boeing 727 and its later cousins - there grew up a cottage industry of smaller jets designed primarily for ultra-rich customers.
Learjet, Lockheed JetStar and the Gulfstream II were the ultimate expressions of those design goals at the time. Selling for around $1 million (a hefty price tag forty years ago), these hand-built air limousines were heavily used by oil-rich sheiks and the J. Paul Getty's of the day.
For the younger crowd, J. Paul Getty was one of the richest men in the world from the 1940s until his death in 1976. The Bill Gates of his day - only his money came from oil not computers - he was the first individual to crack the $1 billion mark.
Gulfstream's GII had room for twelve and the interiors were as classy as the rooms of the most elegant hotels, with powerful motors for long range travel. That tradition continued to the mid-1980s and beyond. In 1985, the GIV weighed in at 74,600 lbs (33,900 kg) and had a range of 4,200 nautical miles.
Though the trend in interiors grew more corporate and less hotel-like through the 1990s, with jets evolving into flying offices, the lowered luxury didn't decrease the functional advantages. Flat-panel video monitors, satellite phones and many more useful amenities all found a place early-on in business jets. Many came to have divided conference rooms, sleeping accommodations and other features conducive to doing business around the clock and around the world.
If you're going to plan business strategies at 30,000 feet you have to have the tools.
As the millennium turned, the business jet market branched out. Larger planes were built to accommodate those with a need for global travel, and smaller jets were designed with lower production and operating costs.
The Boeing executive models of the B757, powered by Rolls Royce engines, has the same potential range as its commercial airline counterpart. Only it typically carries a lot less passenger weight. This plane, and others like the Cessna Citation X or Global Express, can travel almost anywhere in the world non-stop.
On the smaller end, the new VLJ (Very Light Jet) models, such as the HondaJet or Express Aviation's E500 still have great range - around 3,000 nautical miles - but at under 10,000 pounds and carrying only six have much lower production and operating costs.
The future looks even better for bizjets. It won't be too many years before small groups of average businessmen can form fractional ownership arrangements to have a jet at their disposal for short business trips or even a nice vacation.

Andrew Walker @ 2007-01-10 18:05 (Business and Finance) The purpose of long term investment is to meet future needs such as retirement, children’s education etc. Unlike short term investment, which aims to gain profits in a shorter period of time, long term investment often use the “buy and hold” strategy, based on the concept that in the long run equity markets give a good rate of return despite periods of volatility or decline.
For long term investment, there are a number of ways to invest your money.
Bonds are the first option. Bonds are similar to CD, but are issued by the government instead of banks. There are various types of bonds available to be purchased. Depending on which kinds of bonds that you invest in, your initial investment might double over a specific period of time.
Mutual funds are another popular choice for long term investment. A mutual fund is a form of collective investment that pools money from many investors and invests their money in stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, and/or other securities. A fund manager typically decides how the money will be invested. All you need to do is find a qualified broker who manage mutual funds and invest your money, along with other client’s money. Mutual funds are a bit riskier than bonds.
You can also invest in stocks for long term investment. Shares of stocks are essentially shares of ownership in the company you are investing in. When the company does well financially, the value of your stock rises. Please remember that stock is even riskier than Mutual funds.
For long term investment, you should always do your research before making investment decisions. When purchasing stocks you should choose stocks that are well established. When you look for a mutual fund to invest in, choose a broker that is well established and has a proven track record. If you aren’t quite ready to take the risks involved with mutual funds or stocks, at the very least invest in bonds that are guaranteed by the government.

Andrew Walker @ 2006-12-29 06:08 (Business and Finance) Unless you are a stock broker yourself, you might need to hire a broker to handle your investments for you. Brokers are the people who work for brokerage houses and can buy and sell stock on the stock exchange. A lost of people wonder if they really need a broker. The answer is yes. You must have a broker if you plan to buy or sell stocks on the stock exchange.
Most brokers have a background in business or finance, with a Bachelors or more advanced degree. In order to obtain their license, stockbrokers are required to pass two different tests, which are pretty difficult.
Often times people don’t understand the between a broker and a stock market analyst. A stock broker is only there to follow your instructions to either buy or sell stocks; they do not analyze stocks. On the other hand, an analyst literally analyzes the stock market, and predicts what it will or will not do, or how specific stocks will perform.
Most brokers earn their income from commissions on sales. When you tell your broker to buy or sell a stock, they earn a certain percentage of the transaction. Many brokers charge a flat ‘per transaction’ fee.
There are two kinds of brokers: Discount brokers and full service brokers. Discount brokers typically do not offer any advice and do no research – they just do as you ask them to do, without all of the bells and whistles. Full service brokers can usually offer more types of investments, may provide you with investment advice, and is usually paid in commissions.
When it comes to brokers, the biggest decision you must make is usually whether to use a full service broker or a discount broker.
If you are new to investing, you may need to go with a full service broker to make sure you are making wise investment decisions. Full service brokers offer you the skill that you lack at this point. On the other hand, if you already have enough knowledgeable about the stock market, all you really need is a discount broker who will make your trades for you.
